The streets of Brighton streaked by.

‘Have you got eyes on him?’ I asked, the Porsche’s wheels screaming against the tarmac as I took another breakneck turn, the back end kicking out, trying to drag us off the road.

‘No,’ Kirk replied, craning his neck this way and that. ‘We’re clear.’

‘Are you sure?’

‘Yeah. No. I think so. Who knows what that fucker can do? Maybe he’s sat on the roof right now, enjoying the ride.’ He slumped into his seat, facing forward again, a look of concern on his face. ‘Are we cool?’

‘Fuck you.’

‘Is that your fun way of saying, “No”?’

‘You had no right to do that.’

‘Do what? Save your arse?’

‘I’m not some damsel in distress who needs a big, strong man to save me.’

Kirk nodded. ‘You think I’m big and strong?’

I noticed he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt and seriously considered crashing the Porsche into a lampost just so I could see the look on his face as he went sailing through the windscreen.

‘He would have killed you,’ he said. ‘Killed both of us, probably, though he didn’t seem all that interested in me.’

‘I’ve waited most of my life to find him. He was there. He was right there, and now what?’

‘Now you have what he wants. Now you have some dirt on him courtesy of the late, great Chad. Now we use what we know to gather more info on him, and give ol’ red eyes the worst day of his life.’

I gritted my teeth and slapped the wheel with the palm of my hand. ‘Fuck!’

He was right. I knew he was right. God, I hated that. We were outmatched, what good would standing my ground have done us? Would being torn in half in a multi-storey car park have fixed any of my problems? I had to play smarter than that. If I wanted to uncover everything, if I wanted the truth and if I wanted revenge, I had to play this with a cool head. I had to stop being in such a rush to die.

‘Thanks,’ I mumbled, so quietly that even I barely heard it.

‘Don’t worry about it. I know all about the pitfalls of not thinking things through. It’s sort of my speciality area.’

My phone buzzed. I pulled it out to read the message.

‘More good news?’ asked Kirk.

Cupid had something for me.

I took a sharp left and smiled as Kirk’s face mushed against the passenger side window.
